Book Review: Confessions of a Public Speaker by Scott Berkun

A hilarious, entertaining and interactive book - a very good book for those into public speaking. The author shared his public speaking-journey, literally, going to places to speak. He shared his experiences and moments - the ups and downs during his course of work. Every chapter of this book is not boring for me - and the author divides the sections in such a way that the story is easy to follow. While the book is based on his collection of experiences, it could also be used a a guide and 'workbook' as the authors shares tips and exercises which readers could try out. 9/10 for me!

Tips on what to do when things go wrong during a presentation

#01 - A guy won't stop asking questions To prevent: - If people are yelling out comments or questions; request them to raise their hands first To rectify/ respond: - A speaker is not obliged to answer those questions. Ask the audience if anyone is interested in that question and if only a few says yes, tell the asker to come forward for you to answer them afterwards - During a break, talk to the person in private. Thank him and ask him to hold off his questions so others can ask. Offer email address to address his queries. #02 - If an asker takes more than 2 minutes and still rambles a question that makes no sense To prevent: - Difficult to prevent but good to inform audience before-hand that to limit each question to 30-sec per question and 1 question per person. To rectify/ respond: - Ask a clarifying question. Interrupt if necessary and ask them to rethin ktheir questions while you answer the next question. Do it with charm! #03 - The microphone breaks To prevent: - Demand a soundcheck before the talk - Check with sound people/ AV guys if there are sound problems in the room To rectify/respond: - Confirm with the audience if they are hearing the same problem - Contact the tech crew to rectify. Afterall, they are paid for this. #04 - Your time slot gets cut tremendously due to event schedules' mistakes To prevent: - Recommend to event organiser to cut short a break time or ask several speakers to cut short their presentations or make up a few minutes each to fair for everyone. To rectify/ respond: - Ask the organiser to introduce you and to tell the audience that it's not your fault that the schedule has fallen behind. #05 - You left your slides at home To prevent: - Put slides in three places = in a thumbdrive, on the laptop and a website where you can access - Print out a copy as back-up To rectify/ respond: - Make a list of 10 questions - pulled lived from the audience - at the start of the talk. And answer them one by one. Could turn out a much better material that what has been planned. Extracted and summarised from: "Confessions of a Public Speaker" by Scott Berkun.

Hazriq and Nottingham Forest in Berita Harian

Journalist Sani Ali (Berita Harian) and myself were corresponding over email on the recent Forest's 3-0 win against Manchester City in the 3rd round FA Cup. On one of the days, he called up and said he got an idea and wanted to write a feature article on that win; using a different angle.

Here's the article, dated Saturday 17 January 2009 in Singapore's Berita Harian (pg 28):

Movie Review: I AM LEGEND

Movie Review:
I AM LEGEND
starring Will Smith

Reviewed by Mohamad Hazriq Idrus

1. Good inner acting by Will Smith.

2. The director managed to bring the audience from one point to another with good sequence without losing audience concentration.

3. Good use of flashback scenes so audience are “well-equipped” with the knowledge on how he was left as the last human standing in the planet.

4. Good use of suspense as teasers throughout the movie; eg the scenes (i) where Will Smith was looking for his dog in the dark room, and (ii) when he passed out.

5. Moral of the Story: Every problem has a solution. Don’t give ever up. It takes time and even luck, to a certain extent.

I rate: 7.5/10

Akademi Radio 2007

It was such an interesting course to attend. Must say thanks to my sis, Erlin, who suggested me to attend the Akademi Radio course in March 2007.

It was really an eye-opening to learn from the professionals, i.e. AB Shaik, Isadhora and many others. AB Shaik did a marvellous job as the main trainer, sharing his experiences in hosting events. I particularly like a segment, where AB explained on how emcees used different tone level of voice when hosting vis-a-vis normal speaking.

The five-day night programme, Mon-Fri 7.30-10.30pm, saw us "hosting" our own Radio Channel on Day 4. We had to come out with our own scripts, radio format etc. Recording was done in either the Warna 942 or Ria 897 stations, assisted by the various deejays on duty.

<@ ria897FM studio before recording>

Day 5 was the certification day and snippets of the recordings were played. AB, Hassan Salleh and Isadhora provided useful pointers on how we could improve on using our voice.

Watching Tun Fatimah @ Istana Budaya

Finally, managed to get the pics we took at Istana Budaya from Zulfadhli. It was long overdue, but as the saying goes, better late than never. Hehee.

Anyway, below are the pictures we (Zulfadhli, Sahrina and myself) when we visited Istana Budaya to watch the Tun Fatimah bangsawan in July 2004.

Some nice incidents to remember, as we were hanging around the Box Office at about 5pm (it was after raining so we were stranded at Istana Budaya since 2pm), we bumped into the casts of the play, namely Fasha Sandha and Jehan Miskin.

Both were very friendly people. Fasha was so excited when she got to know that we were from Singapore, and even more excited when she found out that we were theatre enthusiast. We started to chat but she had to report to backstage already, so she asked us to stay after the play. She wanted to hear our comments.

With Tun Fatimah herself, starring Fasha Sandha, after the show.

With Zul and Hisyam Tajuddin, who played Bendahara.

Sharing my opinions on her theatre debut and the play as a whole.

With Jehan Miskin as Tun Ali.

With Zul and Sharudin Thamby.

Upcoming Production: Fatamorgana - 7, 9 and 10 March 2007

Fatamorgana
7, 9 and 10 March 2007

-sinopsis-

~Zaman berganti zaman, zaman dimakan waktu, zaman dimamah usia. ……
….. Kau mahu kita kembali ke zaman kuno? Kau mahu kita bertanjak sedangkan di luar bertunjakkan kemajuan? Kau mahu kita bersenjatakan keris, sedangkan di luar beralatkan kemodenan? Kau mahukan kita menapak beralaskan capal, sedangkan di luar menapak mencari kebebasan…? ~

Garisan sehelai rambut manusia. Garisan Fatamorgana....
